Hardware

If you are having problems accessing a drive, you may want to try one of the LiveCD distributions listed below. One in particular is called System Rescue CD and can be very helpful in recovering from drive problems.

Distros: Full-installation

• Fedora Core

• Mandriva: MandrivaLinux or mandriva.com

• Debian

• SUSE: suse.com or OpenSUSE.org (the open source version)

• FreeBSD: Although this is not a Linux distribution, it is a free UNIX-based OS that has much in common with Linux. Many applications made for Linux will run in FreeBSD.

• Ubuntu

  • Kubuntu: like Ubuntu, but based on KDE rather than Gnome

  • Xubuntu: same Ubuntu guts with the lightweight XFCE desktop

• Xandros

• MEPIS

• Gentoo

• Slackware

• GoboLinux: Linux with a smart directory structure and no need for a package manager

Distros: LiveCDs

• One of the best known distributions in this category is KNOPPIX.

• Damn Small Linux (DSL)

• Ubuntu has a very good LiveCD version

• GoboLinux

Linux Stats

• Linux-Stats.org has a client that allows you to add your machine's statistics anonymously. Statistics include kernel version, distro, window manager, file system, hardware, and more.

Learning About Linux

• The YOLINUX website contains great tutorials on many aspects of Linux. It is a great portal to a lot of great information.
